The Lutheran Church in Saxony

Education has become a key issue in modern society. The church also has educational responsibility and is very active in this field. After the political changes in Germany, the interest in corresponding offers increased enormously. This, for instance, is demonstrated by more than 80,000 pupils attending religious education today. Moreover, there are 16 primary schools, four secondary modern schools and three grammar schools with approximately 3,400 pupils in Protestant sponsorship.

In the framework of the Saxon regional church, there exist further training opportunities, e.g. the training as state-approved youth or child care worker at the Protestant Training College for Social Pedagogy “Luise Höpfner” in Bad Lausick or the course for a graduate diploma in social education at the College for Social Work in Dresden. Religious education teachers are trained at the College for Religious Education and Parish Social Service in Moritzburg, and people desiring to study theology in Saxony should register at the department of theology of the Leipzig University. The musically gifted then can apply for training as church musician at the College for Church Music or at the Church Music Institute of the College for Music and Theatre “Felix-Mendelssohn-Bartholdy” in Dresden.

Apart from these training opportunities, the regional church additionally offers various ways of further education. So, the Theological-Pedagogical Institute serves the training and further education of church staff, especially in the field of religious education.

The adult education centre in the country provides space for school classes organizing project weeks and, apart from the seminar work, makes special offers to youth and family groups, church communities, staff groups, groups of disabled people and senior citizens.

In the Protestant Academy in Meissen, important questions of our society are discussed, and people concerned by them, experts and interested citizens search for solutions together. The Protestant Adult Education offers a wide range of education opportunities, too.
